South Indian Film Industries
The six separate cinema industries rooted in the Southern part of India are together referred to as the "Cinema of South India" and are Tamil, Telugu, Tulu, Kannada, Konkani, and Malayalam. Although both industries evolved independently for a considerable amount of time, globalisation and the massive exchange of artists and technicians both contributed to the creation of this distinct identity. By 2010, 6320, or almost 62% of India's 10,167 theatres, were located in South India. For the fiscal year 2013, Tamil and Telugu films' combined net box office receipts accounted for roughly 40% of all Indian films' net receipts. In 2020, the box office receipts from the Hindi film markets, which were at Rs 870 crore, were topped by the combined markets for Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam films, which brought in Rs 1,040 crore. According to box office receipts, the Telugu film industry became India's largest in 2021.
