Kollywood

Tamil cinema, also referred to as Kollywood, is a branch of Indian cinema that produces films in the Tamil language. The word is a combination of Kodambakkam and Hollywood, and it is based in the Kodambakkam neighborhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Keechaka Vadham, the first silent film in Tamil, was created by R. In 1918, Nataraja Mudaliar. Less than seven months after India's first talking movie, Alam Ara, the first talking motion picture, Kalidas, was released. It was a multilingual film directed by H M Reddy. The Entertainment Tax Act of 1939 was enacted by the State of Madras assembly by the end of the 1930s.

Tamil cinema later had a significant impact on other Indian film industries, making Madras (now Chennai) a secondary centre for Sri Lankan, Hindi, and other South Indian film industries. Tamil films from India gained international recognition over the last quarter of the 20th century thanks to distribution to an increasing number of foreign theatres in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Japan, the Middle East, regions of Africa, Oceania, Europe, North America, and other nations. Independent filmmaking in Sri Lanka and Tamil diaspora populations in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Western Hemisphere were also influenced by the industry.
